The Book of Psalms Psalm 126

Douay-Rheims · Challoner revision

Challoner’s heading

Nisi Dominus.

Psalm 126 in the Vulgate numbering this edition follows; Psalm 127 in the Hebrew numbering of most modern Bibles.

1A gradual canticle of Solomon. Unless the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it. Unless the Lord keep the city, he watcheth in vain that keepeth it. 2It is vain for you to rise before light, rise ye after you have sitten, you that eat the bread of sorrow. When he shall give sleep to his beloved, 3Behold the inheritance of the Lord are children: the reward, the fruit of the womb. 4As arrows in the hand of the mighty, so the children of them that have been shaken. 5Blessed is the man that hath filled the desire with them; he shall not be confounded when he shall speak to his enemies in the gate.
Psalm 126 of 150

Text: the Douay-Rheims Bible in Bishop Challoner’s revision, public domain, from Project Gutenberg ebook 8300, set unaltered — 150 psalms and 2,528 verses, checked for gaps. Challoner’s own notes are left out, as in the gospels; the summary at the head of each psalm is his and is labelled as his. Psalms are numbered as in the Latin Vulgate, which differs by one from the Hebrew numbering of most modern Bibles for most of the book; each psalm gives both.
