The English People

The Venerable Bede · A. M. Sellar, 1907 · Middle Ages

Finished at the monastery of Jarrow in 731 and the reason almost anything is known about England between the Romans leaving and the Vikings arriving. Bede wrote to correspondents for documents, named his sources, distinguished what he had been told from what he had read, and dated events from the Incarnation — which is why the whole western world now numbers its years the way he did.

What it shares word for word

Every run of seven words or more that appears both here and in another book on this shelf, merged into the longest passage they have in common. The English People shares wording with 1 of the other 37. This is quotation, or a common source, or one translator doing both — not a resemblance inferred from vocabulary.

The names it carries

Of the sixty counted across the shelf, the ones this book names most. A name is counted wherever it is written, whoever is speaking. Each one has a page of its own listing every chapter, in every book, that carries it.

Books with names in common

The English People shares fewer than twenty of the sixty counted names with any other book here. That is a fact about its vocabulary and nothing more; a book can be deeply indebted to another and share almost no names with it.

The text here is A. M. Sellar’s translation, George Bell and Sons, 1907, public domain, from Project Gutenberg ebook 38326, set unaltered. Sellar’s note markers are removed and her notes are not printed; the history ends where her index begins.

All 140 chapters of the five books, checked against the chapter counts of the Latin.

Public domain, and free to read, copy and quote. Nothing on this page is written by anyone living: the words are the translator’s and the counts are the text’s.
