Homilies on St Matthew

St John Chrysostom · Schaff’s Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, 1888

What this is

Ninety homilies preached straight through St Matthew, verse by verse, by the archbishop of Constantinople whose nickname means golden-mouthed.

How it survives

Preached at Antioch in the 380s and preserved in Greek. The series is the oldest complete commentary on Matthew to come down to us, and Aquinas drew on it heavily.

What is missing

4 of the 90 are not here: 53, 54, 58, 79. Each was checked by searching the whole volume for a heading naming it, and none has one. The rail below shows the 86 that survive, with the gaps left as gaps. Nothing has been supplied in their place.

Reading it beside the gospel

Each piece carries the verses it is on and a door straight into that chapter of St Matthew; each chapter of the gospel offers the pieces that expound it. A piece covers from its own text to the next one’s, so a chapter nobody began a sermon on is still reached by the sermon it falls inside.
