The Life of Antony

Translated by H. Ellershaw, 1892

What this is

The life of the first desert monk, written by the bishop of Alexandria soon after Antony died in 356, and the book that made monasticism a movement. Augustine heard it told in Milan, and it is part of the story of his conversion in the Confessions.

How it is set

One leaf per book, with the sections numbered inside it as Long numbers them. A section of Marcus is often three lines, and a page holding three lines is not a page.

What is not here

Notes. These books have the text and nothing else at present — no map, no lives, no commentary. The Gospel of St Luke shows what an annotated book looks like on this shelf, and these will follow it. An empty heading is better than invented filler.

The two parts

  1. 1 Youth and the desert 9 sections
  2. 2 The address to the monks 1 sections
  3. 3 The inner mountain and the last years 35 sections

Text: St Athanasius, The Life of Antony — H. Ellershaw’s translation for Schaff and Wace’s Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, second series, volume 4, 1892, public domain, from the text at the Christian Classics Ethereal Library. The editor’s prologue and notes are not printed. Set in three parts at the joins the text makes: his youth (§§1–15), his long address to the monks (§§16–43), and the inner mountain and his death (§§44–94).
