What this is
The gospel of St Matthew set out phrase by phrase with the Fathers speaking in turn on each, every one named — Jerome and Chrysostom above all, then Augustine, Hilary, Origen and Rabanus. Twenty-eight chapters and 4,822 quotations.
How it survives
Complete. The first of the four gospels Aquinas chained, finished about 1264 and dedicated to Pope Urban IV.
What is here
All 28, complete and in order.
Reading it beside the gospel
Each piece carries the verses it is on and a door straight into that chapter of St Matthew; each chapter of the gospel offers the pieces that expound it. A piece covers from its own text to the next one’s, so a chapter nobody began a sermon on is still reached by the sermon it falls inside.
